Chepelare: the ski town on the Pamporovo road
Chepelare is a small Rhodope town on the same road that leads to Pamporovo, a little before the resort. Leaving Plovdiv, the driver heads south to Asenovgrad and then up the river valley, passing Bachkovo Monastery and the spa village of Narechenski Bani before Chepelare. The Mechi Chal ski area rises above the town, and the Pamporovo slopes are not far away.
The mountain section is tight and follows every turn of the river. Anyone who feels sick on bends should tell the driver, who will slow down for them.

Winter on the Rhodope road
Between 15 November and 1 March winter tyres are compulsory in Bulgaria. If chains are required on the road, the driver tells you in advance how long the trip will take. On a day of heavy snow we will suggest an earlier departure.
Skis, boots and children
Two people with skis and suitcases travel easily in a sedan. A family with children and full ski kit is better off in a minivan, and a group of up to 8 in the minibus. We fit baby seats, child seats or boosters at no charge; just tell us how old the children are.
