Veliko Tarnovo is Bulgaria's old capital and one of the most visited towns in the country. Visitors come for Tsarevets Fortress, the Samovodska Charshia craft street, the village of Arbanasi and the views over the bends of the Yantra river. It is also a university town, and students often travel home with a lot of luggage. Airports near Veliko Tarnovo

Varna Airport is about 225 km away, around 2 h 45 min, and Burgas Airport is about 220 km, also around 2 h 45 min. Both are handy in summer, when there are lots of flights to the coast.

To the seaside and the mountains

Veliko Tarnovo sits roughly halfway between Sofia and the Black Sea, so many people break their journey to the coast here. From the town you can go straight to Varna, Burgas, Sunny Beach, Nessebar or Golden Sands. See also our page for Varna.

In winter we take skiers to Borovets, Pamporovo and Bansko. Mention your skis and snowboards when you book, so we can send a minivan or minibus with enough space.

When to book early

In summer and early autumn the town is busy with tourists, and many of them move on to the coast on the same days. Students travel in large numbers at the end of September and the start of February, and around Christmas and New Year everyone heads home to family. At these times we suggest booking a few days ahead, especially if you need a minivan or minibus.

In winter the road over the Balkan mountains is sometimes snowy. Our drivers take care and choose the safest road, and your price stays the same because it was fixed in advance. If you have an early morning flight, we will suggest a departure time with plenty of margin so you reach the airport without stress.

Who travels with us

Visitors from abroad who want to see the old town and then carry on to the coast or to Plovdiv. Students who travel with suitcases at the start and end of term and would rather not change buses several times. Families visiting relatives, business travellers, and groups heading to weddings and celebrations. For a group of up to 8, a minibus often works out cheaper than separate tickets, because the price is for the car.
