Thessaloniki Airport transfers to and from Bulgaria
Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport is the largest airport in northern Greece and one of the most convenient for south-west Bulgaria. With TAXI-BG you travel from the terminal in Thessaloniki to Blagoevgrad, Sandanski, Bansko, Sofia or Plovdiv, and back again, with a private driver in a clean, air-conditioned car. The price is fixed and covers the whole car, not each person. You pay nothing in advance: you pay the driver once you get there.
We work non-stop, every day of the year, public holidays included. We can get you to an early-morning flight or meet you after a late landing.
Why people fly from Thessaloniki
Many airlines fly from Thessaloniki to cities all over Europe, budget carriers among them. On some routes fares from there are cheaper than from Sofia, or there is a direct flight you cannot get from Bulgaria. That makes the airport a favourite with people from south-west Bulgaria, students and workers based abroad, and families heading home for the holidays.
For visitors, Thessaloniki is an easy place to start. In winter, skiers land there and carry on to Bansko, and in summer many tourists combine a Greek holiday with a few days in Bulgaria. If you travel as a group, a fixed price per car works out better value than separate tickets for everyone.
The route and distances
From Sofia the road to Thessaloniki follows the Struma motorway past Pernik, Dupnitsa, Blagoevgrad and Sandanski to the Kulata – Promachonas border crossing, then continues on the Greek motorway. These are approximate distances to Thessaloniki:
- Velingrad – Thessaloniki: about 290 km, around 4 h.
- Sofia – Thessaloniki: about 295 km, around 3 h 45 min.
- Stara Zagora – Thessaloniki: about 430 km, around 5 h 20 min.
- Plovdiv – Thessaloniki: about 450 km, around 5 h 15 min.
- Burgas – Thessaloniki: about 585 km, around 6 h 30 min.
- Ruse – Thessaloniki: about 610 km, around 7 h.
- Varna – Thessaloniki: about 700 km, around 8 h 30 min.

The Greek border and your documents
Bulgaria and Greece are both in the European Union and the Schengen area, so there is usually no routine passport control. Even so, checks can happen at the border, and on busy summer days and holidays traffic at Kulata moves more slowly. That is why we build in extra time when you have a flight to catch.
Every passenger, children included, must carry a valid travel document: an ID card or a passport, depending on nationality. If you are not an EU citizen, check the Schengen entry requirements that apply to you before you travel.

Skiing in winter, the sea in summer
Bansko is fairly close to the Greek border and easy to reach from Thessaloniki Airport. In winter we drive skiers with their skis and snowboards; in summer we take tourists on to Plovdiv, Sofia, Velingrad or the Black Sea coast. The summer months and the holidays are the busiest, so book early.
If you would like a few stops along the way, for instance in Sandanski or Melnik, you can hire a car with a driver for a few hours or a full day. We also drive to other places in Greece, including Athens: write to us for a price.
