Pomorie is a seaside resort in southeastern Bulgaria, located only twenty kilometers from Burgas and eighteen kilometers from Sunny Beach. The Nymph cult was extremely widespread. According to local people, the so - called Anchialic nymphs were three girls who inhabited the mountains, the rivers and the forests. They were regarded as protectors of springs - Goddesses. The cult was related to the nearby Aqua Kalide mineral springs. Pomorie was visited personally by the rulers of the Roman Empire, as great celebrations were held on 28th of October 294 in honour of the visit of Emperor Diocletian.
The production of Salt has always been very important for Pomorie region. Fishing also plays a significant part for the subsistence of people and the economy of Pomorie. In 1934 Anchialos was renamed to Pomorie. The museum of Salt which follows the developement of the salt production industry has played very important role for Pomorie. The Lake in Pomorie in the only place in Bulgaria where salt - mines using ancient salt production technologies continue to cooperate. The museum of Salt is located next to Pomorie Lake visitor centre, along the southern edge of the lake.
Like most Black sea settlements, Pomorie has a lot to share about his history. The Historical museum is situated in the renovated building of the former High School and displays various artefacts from prehistoric times till the Middle ages. Monastery of Saint George the Victorious is built in 1856. It is a small complex set in pretty gardens with a quant, icon - filled church and a bell tower covered in saintly frescoes. According to legend, the monastery occupies the site on a 7th century Christian temple and was part of a large Turkish handholding during the Ottoman Empire.
Old Houses of Pomorie are situated near the seacost. The buildings found there provide examples of the typical architectural design of the houses in the Black Sea Region. Make sure that you will visit some of Christian old temples - Saint George Monastery, The Church of Transfiguration of God - which is the oldest building in Pomorie, the Birth of the Virgin Mary Temple and many others. The Pomorian Beehive Tomb impress with its architectural design and it is the only one of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula. According to some people, the tomb served as a mausoleum of a wealthy family from Anchialos. Some of the finds discovered there can be seen in the History museum.
