Skiing from Plovdiv: which resort and how long the drive is
Plovdiv is a good base for a ski trip: three of Bulgaria's main ski resorts are less than three hours away by car. The right choice depends on how many days you have and who you ski with. Below is a short guide to the drive to each resort, the price of a taxi for the whole car, and what to expect on the road in winter.
Pamporovo – the closest, about 1 hour 45 minutes
About 85 km south through Asenovgrad and Chepelare, past Bachkovo Monastery. It is a mountain road with bends, but it is kept clear in winter. Pamporovo is the easy choice for a weekend or even a single day on the slopes. Price: €80 by car, €100 by minivan, €120 by minibus for up to 8 people.
Borovets – about 2 hours
About 125 km on the Trakia motorway to Kostenets and then up past Samokov. Borovets suits groups with mixed levels and skiers who want higher slopes. Price: €90 by car, €120 by minivan, €140 by minibus.
Bansko – about 2 hours 30 minutes
About 150 km through Pazardzhik, Velingrad and Razlog. Bansko is the largest resort in Bulgaria and the usual pick for a full ski week. Price: €120 by car, €160 by minivan, €180 by minibus.
Chepelare

Skis, snowboards and luggage
Tell us in advance how many skis and boards you have. A car fits 2–3 people with ski gear comfortably; four skiers are better off in a minivan. The price is for the whole vehicle, not per person, so for a group of 5–8 a minibus is often cheaper than two cars.
Winter driving
When it snows, the roads to the resorts get slower, so we leave a little earlier rather than rush on the bends. If you land at Plovdiv Airport, the driver meets you at arrivals and you head straight to the mountains.
